The closer your website is to top of the first page in either section generally results in more "click-thrus" to your website. However, the methods to get your website to the top positions are different for sponsored and organic placement.

Pay Per Click
For those who want to yield immediate online results, sponsored placement is the Holy Grail. Sponsored Placement is often referred to as Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing because the websites in the sponsored results section are paying a set fee each time an Internet surfer clicks on their link.

The per-click fee can range from 10 cents to tens of dollars. The two primary companies that run the sponsored link systems are Overture (a Yahoo Company) and Google. Both have different methods for determining what a given click should cost. Sufficed to say, the closer your website is to the top of sponsored results section, the higher the per-click cost.

Going with both providers tends to yield the best results as they use slightly different methods to attract visitor interest and as such tend to attract different visitors.

Organic Optimization
When an Internet surfer types search terms into the search box of a given search engine, the engine uses a complex algorithm to determine what web site and pages should show up in the organic section of the results.
The process of optimizing your website to address these algorithms is known as search engine optimization (SEO). Efforts included SEO are:

Optimizing "on page" factors such as website content, meta tags (HTML code used to describe your site for search engines) and links.

Augmenting "off page factors" such as links to the website and directory listings.

It's not an exact science nor does it yield results over night, but leads to a gradual build up of traffic over a period of time. Long term, your Return on Investment (ROI) on SEO and other online marketing can far exceed the use of traditional marketing means.
